I have offically have all of my classes, that is showed up to all of my classes for the first time. I guess in the main for people who read this they'd be interested in what Industrial Design is like here. I the main i'd say i wish i never left RMIT, not because i'm home sick or that i like my comfort zone, but home, i dont have to pay for most of my materials, here even if i'm after a bit of card to mix some epoxy i have to bring it or pay for it. So if your making furniture, as what i'm going to be doing soon, imagine trying to get all the timber and metals you'd need along with other stuff and carrying it from say north melbourne or the docklands back to workshop. I mean i suppose i could strap it to my back and ride my bike back to workshop here, but it can get tricky with bits of timber. So first off materials is hard to come by here, well not hard to come by, but hard to get and bring back.
The way students interact with teachers? its strange, the post grad students are allowed to call their teachers whatever they want, they're seen as equals, the frist years through to 4th years are more or less placed in a position to treat their lectuerers or as they call them here "professors" walking gods. So it feels kind of werid calling my drawing teacher a professor, besides just the issue of not being use to it, but how do you coffer to a guy who spent his days at uni stoned and got a diploma in life drawing a professor? Its hard. Personally I think the course they teach here is too stifled, everythings is so structured and controled, you could take a shit without approval. So i take back all the things i said about Industrial design back at RMIT, because here? Here its the antithesis of what is happening at home. I suppose there are good sides and there are back sides, but over all, I think i realised what all the effort they put in to teach us things we didnt understand means. I still have issues with their upper pool studios being run like first year studios but thats just the way they work here. Equipment wise, they have everything you could possibly want, they use technologies here i've never seen before or heard of or even though possible for a student to get their hands on. Half the time the first year dont even make mock ups themselves from foam or anything, what they do is they make a 3d modle and have it 3d printed. So much money and waste here. So much, so very very cool and easy.
So thats all i can think of right now about here and home, the differences between the Industrial Design courses, oh and one more thing, admin here is worse than RMIT, RMIT looks awesome, like a fucking Utopia compaired to what they have here.
